What would our lives be like without tubes? From water pipes to electrical wires, from blood vessels to cathode rays, one could say that our whole lives from dong till dust is directed by tubes. And yet we never seem to give this theoretical "tube" the honor that we (at least here at the Pleasure Center) feel it deserves.
Our new EP, aptly and succinctly titled "Tubes", is an homage to this dogged and persistent creation. From the opening pipe-maze of "My Body" to the closing rigatoni-funk of "Is It Possible???", the music pushes tubes to the center of our focus, where we are encouraged to imagine a world in which we serve our tubes, instead of our tubes merely serving us. The dubby and bouncy "Give Me Attention" asks us to pay more attention to our tubes in general, while highlighting the recorder, a humble instrument literally built out of a tube. Meanwhile, the driving "Put It In Your Mouth" takes inspiration from a child's first method of comprehension, and implores us to put as many tube-like objects into our mouths as will fit during our lifetime, gaining a deeper primitive understanding of tubes. It may seem counter-intuitive, then, to include a song about a floor, a notoriously flat plane, but consider that a tube could also be considered a rolled-up floor.
Every day mankind steps on our tubes, puts kinks in our tubes (which, to be fair, is kinky) and turns one eye from the tubes that surround us and all that they transmit within them. We must let these tubes carry and deposit their loads unobstructed by our all-too-human prejudice and avarice. Perhaps, with the newfound awareness of tubes provided by this musical artifact, we will recognize the value that they bring to our lives in a radical new way. Our vision is that humanity can collectively evolve to decide which tubes should be revered and what tubes, though honorable their duty, should be gracefully retired from service and laid, like pipes, to rest.
